Agatha Christie spent many happy years at Greenway House. The house was once a Devonshire estate and was first mentioned in 1493. In the mid-sixteenth century, the Gilbert family acquired the land and built a medieval court on the property. The Gilbert family remained on the estate until the mid-1700s, when they sold it to the Roope family. The Roope family took the time to knock down the medieval court and build the house. Some of the medieval court can still be seen at Greenway House.

Besides Greenway House, you can also visit the nearby Seymour’s Castle. This 15th century ruin was once intended to be the grandest house in Devon. Thankfully, it is still accessible via the Greenway Train or the ferry service from Paignton.
